Godavari (Kailali), June 9: Nirmala Sharma, Chairperson of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), has said that journalism will find space to grow and flourish only if democracy is strengthened.

Speaking at a province-level dialogue organized by FNJ Sudurpashchim Province in Dhangadhi today, she stressed the need for further promoting professional and ethical values in journalism, which serves as a vital means of informing the public.

Acknowledging the increasing challenges faced by journalism recently, Sharma urged journalists to be careful of their personal safety while carrying out their professional duties.

On the occasion, the formation of the Free Media Network was announced. According to Sharma, the Network will play a crucial role in promoting civic freedom, press freedom, and the safety of journalists.

She also highlighted various challenges, including the ongoing economic crisis, which is a common issue for journalists across the country. The economic difficulties have worsened the plight of journalists working in the field, she added.

The 17-member Network, led by Bharat Shah, Chair of FNJ Sudurpashchim, comprises civil society leaders, representatives from government entities, and members of journalist-related organizations. (RSS)
