Food Safety Day being observed with various events

Kathmandu, June 2: The 17th National Food Safety Day is being observed under the slogan 'Food Safety: Indispensability of Science.

Organising a press conference here on Monday, the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control shared that Nepal had started celebrating the Day since 2065 BS before the World Food Safety Day. Department Director General, Sanjeev Kumar Karna, said the 73th UN General Assembly in 2018 had decided to observe World Food Safety Day on June 7 every year since 2019.

Spokesperson of the Department, Mohan Krishna Maharjan, shared that various programmes would be organized for a week from June 1-7 to observe the 17th National Food Safety Day. 

As per the World Health Organisation, people suffer from more than 200 diseases including diarrhoea and cancer every year in the world due to unhygienic and contaminated food. Similarly, 420,000 people die from contaminated food-related disease while around 550 million people fall sick to diarrhoea and 230,000 die from it.  

The Constitution of Nepal guarantees the people's right to food. The Federal Parliament has amended the laws related to Food Safety and Quality as well as Food Hygiene and Quality Act, 2081. (RSS)
