By TRN Online, Kathmandu, May 14: Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Arzu Rana Deuba has identified the upcoming "Sagarmatha Sambad" as an important platform for elevating Nepal's presence on the international platform, and addressing climate change issues across the globe and Nepal in particular.
She
highlighted the importance of the dialogue and called for shared commitment and
cooperation for addressing the impacts of climate change.
She was speaking at a workshop on climate adaptation and resilience for South Asia organised in Kathmandu today.
The
dialogue, scheduled to take place in Kathmandu from May 16 to 18, focuses on
the situation of climate change, mountains, and the future of humanity,
bringing together communities affected by climate change, scientists,
policymakers, mountaineers, world leaders, and international organisations.
"Our
efforts alone are not enough to deal with climate change issues. The dialogue
aims to provide a common platform for collective cooperation and coordination
across the region."
Pointing out
to climate-related disasters like temperature rise, irregular rainfall and
floods, glacial lake outburst floods, droughts, forest fires, etc. facing Nepal
and other mountainous countries, she said, “This conference will be important
for Nepal and other vulnerable countries to come together to address impacts of
climate change, and collectively advocate for climate justice on the global
stage."
On the
occasion, Dr Rana informed about Nepal's enforcement of the Disaster Risk
Reduction and Management Act and formulation of related policies and strategic
action plans.
She
reiterated Nepal's commitment to the implementation of the Paris Agreement,
highlighting its ongoing activities like adoption of policies related to the
promotion of green energy, use of electric vehicles, encouragement of forest
expansion including community forests, and protection of reservoirs, national
parks and other natural heritage.
