Constitutional amendment needed for presidential, fully proportional poll system: Chair Prachanda

By Nisha Rai, Dharan, May 11: CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has pointed at the need of amendment to the constitution.

Inaugurating the joint conference of Kiranti and Limbuwan National Liberation Front, Nepal, the former Prime Minister emphasised on reviewing the electoral system to make it fully proportional as the existing one has been hijacked by the moneyed people.

He also viewed for change in constitution to make for a executive presidential system.

"We all have to get united for a battle, the battle to end anomalies, corruption and for maintaining good governance and ensuring rights to the people," said the former Prime Minister, "Battle does not mean to go underground, it is to use street, parliament and government as fronts and if we do so, we can win the battle."

He urged the people to support the Maoist Center's campaign to make the constitution more inclusive and socialism oriented. "The constitution is the product of a coordination of the people's war and the people's movement."

The leader of the main opposition party also termed Harka Raj Rai, mayor of Dharan sub-metropolis, a beautiful flower of republican system and that there was no need for him to be negative against the Maoists.

The former PM argued that he initiated a firm campaign for good governance and against corruption while in the government. "I had even instructed the police chief to not leave even me if any arrow of investigation turned toward me."

Chairman Prachanda exhorted identity groups in the east which are carrying out movement, progressive people and newly emerging personalities and political parties to collaborate with the Maoist Center for ending anomalies, misappropriation and corruption prevalent in the country.
