Science and Technology Information Management conference concludes

By A Staff Reporter, Kathmandu, May 11: International Conference on "Science and Technology Information Management System: Practices and Experiences" held in Kathmandu concluded with the adoption of a significant resolution aimed at advancing Science and Technology information management systems in developing countries.

The conference, which took place from May 7-9, brought together delegates from governments, academic institutions, and research organizations in countries such as Egypt, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan.

The event was co-organized by the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) and the Centre for Science and Technology of the Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries (NAM S&T Centre), New Delhi.

The event served as a platform for sharing knowledge, addressing common challenges, and discussing solutions for improving research collaboration, innovation, and sustainable development through effective S&T information management, Dr. Rabindra Dhakal, secretary of the NAST stated.

Key themes programme included the importance of regional and international cooperation, the integration of emerging technologies like AI and big data, and the promotion of open access and data-sharing frameworks to increase research visibility and inclusivity.


The Kathmandu Resolution, adopted unanimously by the delegates, outlines several key recommendations, including the establishment of a knowledge-sharing network, capacity building and training programs, the development of national S&T information policies, and the promotion of collaborative research portals. It also emphasizes the need for public-private partnerships and the mobilization of resources for sustainable development.

The resolution will be presented to governments and relevant bodies for consideration, aiming to strengthen the role of S&T information systems in supporting evidence-based decision-making and innovation for sustainable development in the Global South, secretary Dhakal stated.

On this occasion, Minister Mr. Prithvi Subba Gurung mentioned that information technology defines the success of society and that the information system is the engine of national development. He further stated that the government gives high priority to the development of this sector.
