Kathmandu, April 11: Minister for Forests and Environment, Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, has said the efforts for the Department of Plant Resources in the identification, conservation, study and research of plants are laudable.
Speaking at the 65th anniversary of the Department and the 26th Plants Day today, the Minister wished for more achievements for the Department ahead.
Stating that Nepal is rich diversities of plants, the Minister said, "Nepal's atmosphere, natural resources and tropical structure is distinct, highlighting its significant value."
Also speaking on the occasion, Minister of State for Forest and Environment, Rupa BK, said there is high potential for a sufficient market opportunities for herbs in Nepal.
She underlined the need for the exploration of medicinal values of plants, the expansion of herbs and plants as sources of fragrant oils, and the establishment of plants-based industries.
Secretary at the Ministry, Dr Deepak Kumar Kharal, said increasing environmental crisis has posed a threat to species and plants.
The celebrations were held with the theme of " Conservation of Plants: Base for Happiness and Prosperity".
On the occasion, Prof Dr Mohan Shiwakoti was honoured with the 'National Plants Prize, 2081 BS'.
Seven people were honoured with a long-service award and 11 with the letter of appreciation.(RSS)
