No laws to be made against people's fundamental rights-Speaker

Gandaki, March 8: Speaker Devraj Ghimire said the parliament would not make laws in a way to snatch the people's fundamental rights.     

At a programme organized by Press Club Gandaki in Pokhara today, he clarified that the parliament would not formulate laws against people's welfare noting that democracy was an outcome of the people's longstanding struggle.     

Speaker Ghimire said that there would be no law in a democratic system to curb press freedom. Noting that the parliament would not make any law to curb the freedom of expression, he said,     

"In the absence of laws, many irregularities have increased. The laws were necessary to stop propagation of wrong things", he said while stressing the need to control and regulate anomalies seen in social media.     

He made it clear that the freedom of expression of individuals would not be violated while enacting laws to control such distortions.     

Speaker Ghimire further said that the task of the media sector is not only to write and disseminate news, but also to protect democratic achievements and disseminate the activities of the society.     

Speaker Ghimire honoured journalist Krishna Mani Baral with the Press Club Journalism Award with cash Rs 50,000, shawl and certificate. Journalist Baral was honoured in recognition of his contribution to the promotion of eco-tourism and conservation of vulture through the medium of journalism.(RSS)
