Taplejung, Feb.27: Carpets have become the main source of income for Olangchung Gola village of Phaktanglung rural municipality-7 in Taplejung District.
The traditionally woven carpets made in Taplejung are exported to the Chinese market and have a good demand there. The locally made carpet was restricted within the border due to a closed border during COVID-19 infection.
Entrepreneur Phup Lhamu Shrestha said that the carpets produced in Olangchung Gola are now being exported to various markets in China with the reopening of the border. This has helped to elevate the financial situation and provide economic opportunities for locals.
Carpets produced by Olangchung Gola are also popular in the Nepalese market. The carpets of this area reach Kathmandu through Phungling Bazar of Taplejung district.
He said that the price of these carpets in the Nepali market ranges from Rs 10,000 to 25,000 per piece.
According to entrepreneur Shrestha, the price of the same carpets is very high in the Chinese market, where they are bought and sold for Rs 15,000 to 45,000.
The local producers get a good profit by selling it beyond border due to the difference in prices in the international market.
In this way, the carpets exported to China have presented as a great opportunity for the economic prosperity of entrepreneurs and artisans in Olangchung Gola.
With the opening of the border, this trade network has expanded further.
It has also created jobs at the local level.
Export opportunities have started to play an important role in the prosperity of Olangchung Gola region of the district.
