blog

Kathmandu, Feb.19: A variety of programs are being held across the country today to celebrate Democracy Day, in commemoration of the day when the Nepali people stood against the then-autocratic Rana regime subsequently establishing democracy for the first time in the country.

As a result of the struggle and sacrifices of the ordinary Nepali people, the Rana regime ended on Falgun 7, 2007 B.S. beginning a new era of democracy. Notably, Shukraraj Shastri, Gangalal Shrestha, Dasharath Chand, Dharmabhakta Mathema and others sacrificed their lives to liberate their fellow Nepalis from the autocratic rule.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has been scheduled to address the Democracy Day ceremony.

The government has declared a public holiday today on the occasion of Democracy Day.

In a message issued on Wednesday, President Ramchandra Paudel paid tribute to all those who contributed to the movements for Nepal’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, national interest, dignity, and democracy. He honoured all known and unknown martyrs who sacrificed their invaluable lives in various struggles for the establishment of democracy in the country
