Morang, Feb 13: Chief Minister of Koshi Province, Hikmat Kumar Karki, has described the child marriage as a social issue. During his meeting with a delegation from the Just Rights for Children in Nepal at his office in Biratnagar today, the Chief Minister echoed the need of collective efforts to prevent the occurrence of early marriage.
On the occasion, he signed a commitment paper against the child marriage practice.
He apprised the delegation that the province government has implemented policies and legal measures as a campaign to end early marriage. "Child marriage has been prohibited in the province. However, it is still is in practice in some remote and backward areas," he said. According to him, security agencies and society should act seriously to discourage and address this social problem.
Social activists Bal Krishna Pandey, and Dr Gangadhar Adhikari apprised the Chief Minister that Chief Ministers of other six provinces have already signed the commitment paper against the child marriage. The event was attended by province-based various ministers and secretaries. (RSS)
