GBV cannot be reduced just by making laws: Minister Sudi

Kathmandu, Nov 25: Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Nawal Kishor Sah Sudi has said that violence against women cannot be reduced by making laws alone.

To reduce violence against women it is necessary to promote equality in the society.     

Inaugurating the 16-day campaign against gender-based violence today, Minister Sudi said positive thinking and the spirit of equality should be awakened, which is possible through continuous campaigns.     

At the program organized by National Women's Commission, Minister Sudi said that empowered women means opening the way for development and prosperity of the country. "In order to prevent all kinds of violence against women active participation of all from the government to the people is needed."     

Chairperson of Women's Commission, Kamala Parajuli, said that the VAW campaign will help spread public awareness against violence and discrimination in the society. Stating that the nature and form of violence against women has changed compared to the past, she shared that women are unsafe even from their own relatives.     

On the occasion, Yoga Guru Ramesh Nepal said that violent activity is the result of a distorted mentality and suggested that such bad behavior can be eradicated through meditation and yoga.(RSS)
