Conflict-hit women demand prompt resolution to their problems

Manahari (Makawanpur), Nov 20: The women affected by decade-long armed conflict have demanded measures to address their demands.     

The key demands they put forth in an interaction organized by National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Bagmati Province here today include prompt arrangement for monthly allowance, identity card, reservation quota, insurance and skill-oriented training.     

In the interaction co-organized by the Adarsha Nari Bikas Kendra and The Story Kitchen, they grieved that the government was not sensitive towards their problems related to livelihood and availing basic healthcare facilities among others.     

The interaction was held in the context of implementing the second national action-plan on the Resolution No 1325 on Women, Peace and Security adopted by the Security Council of the UN and Resolution No 1820 which calls for protection of civilians, inter-alia, women and girls from all forms of sexual violence.     

Responding to their grievances, Bagmati Province's Minister for Internal Affairs and Law Suraj Chandra Lamichhane asserted that the provincial government was committed towards addressing the problems long facing conflict-hit children and women.     

Minister Lamichhane assured that the provincial government was willing to work for the empowerment of the conflict-affected people, especially women, which remains to be worked out for so long.     

He assured to coordinate effort with the concerned ministries and accord high priority to the issues related to women, peace and security (WPS) in the provincial government's upcoming annual plans, policies and programmes.     

Likewise, Chief Secretary of the Bagmati Province Dr Hari Prasad Lamsal reaffirmed the provincial government's commitment for policy decision and to work in favor of conflict victims.     

Similarly, NHRC Bagmati province chief Pawan Bhatta drew the concerned agency and stakeholders towards the objectives and relevance of the second national action-plan regarding implementation of the afore-said resolutions.(RSS)
