Kathmandu, Nov. 7: TikTok has been officially registered as a social media platform at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.
According to Sub-section 1 of Section 3 of the Social Media Management Directive-2080, any individual, company, or organisation that wants to operate a social media platform must register with the Ministry in accordance with this directive.
According to Subsection 4 of Section 3 of the same directive, the concerned individual, company, or organisation must submit an application in the format specified in Schedule 1, attaching the documents mentioned in Schedule 1.
The Council of Ministers had decided to register TikTok during its meeting on October 24.
Information Officer and Under Secretary Mamata Bastola said that TikTok was formally registered on Tuesday at the Ministry, noting that there had been a slight delay due to the Dashain and Tihar festivals.
Under the Social Media Management Directive, the Ministry has issued a notice to ensure that other social media platforms operating within Nepal are registered promptly.
Along with TikTok, other social media platforms like Viber and WeChat have also been registered at the Ministry. "Other social media platforms are in the process of registration," said Under Secretary Bastola, adding, "The Ministry aims to organise all platforms in a timely manner."
