57 more mountains opened for climbing in Nepal

Kathmandu, Oct 8: The government has announced opening of 57 more mountains for climbing.     

The announcement come as part of its tourism development plans outlined by the government in the current fiscal year 2024/25.     

The Council of Ministers' meeting convened on October 7 decided towards this effect upon the recommendations of the Department of Tourism.     

The newly opened peaks range between 5,000 metres to 6,500 metres in height. The latest announcement brings the number of mountains open for climbing in Nepal to 461, informed Rakesh Gurung, Director at the Department of Tourism.     

The relevant ministry in the country coordinated efforts with the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) for this initiative aimed at expanding climbing destinations for promotion of the adventurous tourism.     

Opening more mountains for climbing has spread a positive message in the tourism sector, assessed NMA President Nimanuru Sherpa. "To open new peaks for ascent means developing a new tourism destinations," he asserted.     

According to him, there are over 2,000 mountains deemed suitable for climbing. He suggested the government considering further openings in coming days to foster tourism sector. Sherpa, however, emphasized the need to develop and expand infrastructures and communication networks up to the newly accessible mountains so as to attract more tourists.     

He claimed the more mountains are opened for climbing, the higher number of foreign tourists would visit Nepal.(RSS)
