TRN Online, Kathmandu, Oct 4: Relief operation for the landslide and flooding
victims has been launched by the Good Will Foundation (XZ.A.R.) and the China
Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD).
The
relief operation named "Jointly Facing Challenges, Overcoming Hardships
Together" was launched in Teku, Kathmandu to assist those affected by the
catastrophic floods and landslides.
More
than 42
households received donations from Chinese NGOs, distributed by foundation
staff, according to a press release by the CFRD.
Beginning
on September 26th, the Kathmandu Valley and other parts of Nepal were struck by
continuous heavy rainfall, leading to devastating floods and landslides. These
disasters caused heavy loss of life and
damage to property, with landslides, road blockages, collapsed houses, and
destroyed bridges across the region.
Over 220 people lost their lives, dozens remain missing, and hundreds have been injured. In response, the Good Will Foundation (GWF) immediately began coordinating efforts, maintaining direct communication with Nepal to assess the situation. Together with CFRD, GWF quickly launched the "Assist Nepal’s Catastrophic Flood Relief Operation" to provide immediate aid to those affected in the Kathmandu Valley, according to the CFRD.
The
relief efforts were spearheaded by the GWF and CFRD teams. The CFRD Nepal
office swiftly mobilized its resources, postponing staff vacations to focus on
the operation. Thanks to their local presence, they were able to procure,
transport, and distribute essential relief materials quickly.
In
the first phase of the operation, 42 carefully prepared family packs and food
packages were distributed. These kits included vital supplies such as daily
toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrushes, towels, and soap), water storage
containers (buckets and jars), female hygiene products (sanitary napkins),
emergency food supplies (rice, flour, edible oil, and compressed
biscuits), and items for warmth and mosquito prevention (blankets, sleeping
mats, and mosquito nets), read the statement.
This
initiative marked the second collaboration between GWF and CFRD, following
their joint efforts during the "International Assistance Operation Against
COVID-19: Nepal Community Anti-Epidemic Hygiene" project in 2020. Their
swift action ensured that initial supplies reached disaster relief shelters
promptly, as per the statement.
GWF
has long been involved in public welfare projects in Nepal, focusing on
supporting youth and women through skills training aimed at promoting employment
and improving quality of life. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the foundation
also donated 550,000 protective masks and 75 oxygen generators to Nepal. GWF
plans to continue its efforts by launching more livelihood improvement and
skills training projects to benefit the people of Nepal, read the CFRD press
release.
