Nepal-China media cooperation vital for deepening relations: Minister Gurung

By TRN Online, Kathmandu, Sept 26: Minister for Communication and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung has emphasized on media cooperation between Nepal and China for deepening relations between the two neighbours.

Addressing the third China-Nepal Media Summit organized by South Asia Network Television Media Group held today, Minister Gurung viewed that media cooperation can enhance mutual understanding, promote cultural exchanges, support in up-scaling media industry, consolidate bilateral relations of the media sector, which in turn helps in expanding friendly relations between the two countries and peoples.

"I understand that this Summit is very important as it is being held to promote cooperation between news media of Nepal and China and thereby deepen people-to-people friendship between the two countries," said Minister Gurung, adding, "I believe this Summit will open up new avenues for media persons of the two countries for mutual benefit, knowledge sharing and opportunities."

Referring to friendly relations between Nepal and China since ancient times, Minister Gurung said that China has in the modern era been supporting Nepal in sectors such as hydropower development, infrastructure construction, reconstruction after the Great Earthquake, capacity building of the employees, education, health and information technology and disaster management.


He said that the government has initiated a process to amend existing laws related to media to make the media and communication sector including information technology well managed and effective.

Saying that Nepal was eager to take advantage from China's development, Minister Gurung said that a new dynamism for Nepal's prosperity would be added if some significant projects being run with China's assistance including Nepal-China cross-country railways and Kerung-Kathmandu railways could be moved forward. He said Nepal was positive about the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
