By Kabiraj Ghimire,Hile, Sept. 21: A sterilisation campaign has been launched in Dhankuta to control the rising menace of stray dogs.

The campaign began in the Dhankuta market area, aiming to manage the stray dog population through sterilisation.

Hima Kumari Gautam, head of the Veterinary Hospital and Animal Services Expert Centre, Dhankuta, informed that the sterilisation campaign was part of the initiative to manage community dogs.

She said that the stray dogs had been causing problems, such as attacking children, making nighttime travel difficult, and even causing accidents. Therefore, the sterilisation programme was initiated to control their population.

Sterilised dogs also receive rabies vaccinations during the procedure, reducing the risk of rabies. Also, sterilisation helps lower the chances of breast and uterine cancer in female dogs. The permanent sterilisation, combined with hormone injections, is the best option for dog population control, the centre said.

The centre further said that sterilisation increases a dog’s lifespan, improves its health, and keeps it cleaner.

The camp, organised by the Veterinary Hospital and Animal Services Expert Centre, Dhankuta, began on Thursday and will run until September 23.
