blog

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is leaving for New York on September 20 to participate in the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This time, the Prime Minister's visit has three-fold importance. First, he is expected to raise Nepal's global standing and highlight neutral foreign policy. Second, he will put emphasis on climate change issues and challenges facing the mountainous countries like Nepal and draw the world's attention to the climate crisis. And the third is about current political situation at home and Nepal's democratic journey in the global forum.

Addressing the House of Representatives (HoR) about his first foreign trip upon assuming office, the Prime Minister assured of his unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nepal's sovereignty and advancing its international standing while attending the global forum in New York. Shedding light on Nepal's foreign policy which advocates for neutral and harmonious international relations based on the UN Charter, the Prime Minister told the House that Nepal would not tolerate any interference in its internal affairs and not intervene in the affairs of others.

The Prime Minister said he would represent the country in the international forum with deep realisation that politics was for the nation and people, and for the future generation just like it concerned for the present generation. The Prime Minister is scheduled to address the 'Future Summit' in the UNGA and present Nepal's views on humanity, security of the earth, ecosystem of the Himalayas and the seas in the emerging climate context that sea levels are rising due to melting down of the Himalayas.

The PM would put forth views in the UNGA about Nepal's constitution, democratic norms and values, identity as a sovereign and independent nation, national interests and international commitments. It is the faith and commitment to democracy that places Nepal on the firm footing in the world arena. "I will talk about our efforts for development and prosperity and the challenges we have faced as well as on ways for cooperation with the global community for complementing our efforts," the Prime Minister said, adding that Nepal wanted a good neighbourly relations and it would behave with our neighbours as per its conviction. The nation has the motto of amity with all and enmity with none.

In the 'Future Summit' the Prime Minister will focus on ensuring a secure future for humanity and the planet. Nepal's perspectives on critical issues such as climate change and its impact on mountain ecosystems will be presented during the address. Located between the two giant neighbours, Nepal has adopted balanced foreign policy based on the principle of Panchasheel, the UN Charter, Non-aligned Movement and various international conventions and laws. The Himalayan nation is poised to muster global support to fight poverty and environmental crisis induced by the global warming. As a mountainous nation, Nepal will make a clarion call for climate justice, and the donors and international community are expected to pay heed to its concerns. Majestic Himalayas are melting at an alarming rate. PM will emphatically put spotlight on the climate issues while speaking at the various international platforms.
