By Jayakrishna Yadav,Inaruwa, Apr. 2: Nineteen houses of 10 families were destroyed in a fire that broke out at Jamuwa in Nahar Chowk of Koshi Rural Municipality-3 in Sunsari on Sunday afternoon.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Nabin Krishna Bhandari said that houses, motorcycles, rickshaws, paddy and jewellery were destroyed in the fire.
According to DSP Bhandari, the settlement of Nahar Chowk caught fire at 1:00 pm on Sunday.
Houses of local Qadir Miya, Mohammad Ansari, Abul Kalam, Rashid Ansari, Irfan Ansari, Samla Bano Ansari, Arif Ansari, Ismail Ansari, Samiullah Ansari and Zainuddin Ansari were destroyed.
The fire started when an electric pole near the house of local Kadir Miya went short circuit.
Victims said that 19 houses roofed with straw and corrugated zinc sheets as well as thatched roofed kitchens and cowsheds were destroyed.
The fire was brought under control after two hours with the help of fire brigades from Koshi Rural Municipality, Barah Kshetra, Inaruwa, Ramdhuni Municipality and Itahari Sub Metropolitan City along with locals, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force.
Strong wind made it difficult to bring the fire under control.
The fire was brought under control by mobilising five fire engines simultaneously, said police.
Local Mikail Alam said that immediate relief arrangements have been made for the fire victims. Local representatives and federal lawmakers who were available in the district also reached the incident site.
