By Our Correspondent,Bhairahawa, Mar. 14 :Rupandehi Traffic Police has begun educating passengers and drivers about road lane discipline.
Drivers of all types of vehicles plying along the Siddhartha Highway, the Belahiya-Butwal six-lane road, the East-West Highway and the Postal Road are being taught lane discipline and traffic rules.
On the first day of the campaign, on Tuesday, more than 1,000 small vehicle drivers were taught lane discipline.
Traffic checking has also been intensified through radar guns, especially targeting those driving at a high speed. Bajir Singh Bista, chief of the District Traffic Police Office, Rupandehi, said that more than 1,000 drivers were taken action for driving by exceeding the speed limit in a month alone.
"Not only this, we have also been teaching schools, social organisations and transport professionals about traffic rules," he said.
After the launching of the traffic education, the monthly accident rate in Rupandehi has also started decreasing by 20 per cent, said Bista.
"All kinds of efforts are taken from our side to prevent road accidents," he said.
According to the traffic, not only small vehicles but also passenger and cargo vehicles have been found violating the lane discipline.
With the widening of roads in the country the lanes have also been separated with varied speed limits, but still, the risk of accidents is increasing as the drivers do not abide by the traffic rules.
According to the rules, there is a provision to drive at only or below 60 km per hour depending on the level of the road.
In developed countries, it is difficult to find drivers who violate traffic rules. However, we tend to break the rules rather than follow them when driving, he said.
He said that by being disciplined and following the traffic rules, the risk of accidents could be reduced.
Bista shared his experience that many passengers were happy to be educated on the road during the lane discipline campaign launched by the traffic police.
Local Bheshraj Gaire said that the traffic alerted him because he did not follow the lane discipline while driving a motorcycle.
"I failed to abide by the traffic lane rules, the traffic police stopped my vehicle and taught me a lot," he said, "Now I always abide by the rules while driving."
