By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Nov. 2: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has designated Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, as a ‘Creative City of Film’. On the occasion of World Cities Day on Tuesday, UNESCO informed that 55 cities of the world including Kathmandu have been included in the Creative Cities Network.
UNESCO has listed 55 new cities under seven creative networks.
These creative fields include crafts and folk art, design, film, gastronomy, literature, media arts and music.
With the latest additions, the Network now counts 350 cities in more than 100 countries, informed UNESCO through a press release.
UNESCO mentioned in its press release, “New cities were acknowledged for their strong commitment to harnessing culture and creativity as part of their development strategies, and displaying innovative practices in human-centred urban planning.”
Newly designated cities will cooperate with Network members to strengthen their resilience in the face of evolving threats such as climate change, rising inequality, as well as rapid urbanisation, with 68 per cent of the world’s population projected to live in the urban areas by 2050, informed the UNESCO.
According to the press release, Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General said, “The cities in our Creative Cities Network are leading the way when it comes to enhancing access to culture and galvanising the power of creativity for urban resilience and development.”
Meanwhile, organising a press conference on Wednesday, Kathmandu Metropolitan City has decided to establish Kathmandu Creative Art Council to promote and develop the Nepali film and art sector. Nabin Manandhar, spokesperson for the Metropolis informed that the metropolis will coordinate and assist in formulating law to encourage filmmakers.
