The central committee meeting of the Nepal Communist Party (Unified Socialist) that concluded Thursday decided to hold general convention next year. The CC members discussed current political, social and theoretical issues to make them agenda in the forthcoming convention. One of the theoretical agenda is whether ‘Janatako Bahudaliya Jananbad’ (people’s multiparty democracy), should be adopted as the party’s guiding principle or merely as a tactical programme. The leaders will hold deliberations on it in the upcoming convention that is expected to strengthen the party politically and theoretically in the days to come.
Party workers and commoners supporting the left parties have got only assurances from them. Their aspirations to be sovereign, united and prosperous are yet to be fulfilled. It is because the communist movement has been divided into many segments politically, socially and culturally.
On the necessity of a strong leftist force in the country, noted Nepali Congress leader late Pradeep Giri said in an interview to a TV channel. His interview came after the dissolution of the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) by a Supreme Court verdict. Following the verdict that declared the creation of CPN comprising CPN-UML and CPN-Maoist Centre null and void, the TV journalist has posed a question before Giri: Are communists declining in Nepal? Will this benefit the NC?
Contrary to the expectation of the journo, Giri said that the Nepali communist parties had been carrying a huge burden for the democratic movement. ‘It is the single great force on which the majority of the voters pin faith for dignified nationality and prosperous future. Therefore, a strong Leftist force is necessary in the country.’
He further added that in the democratic countries, the people have been divided into two poles - Left and Right. From the economic point of view, the poles are seen leaning nearer to each other, but from the political and nationalistic perspective, they stand apart and strong. So, if one of the poles becomes weak, there are high chances of social instabilities and anomalies.
Giri’s analysis matches with the political history of the world. The democratic system practices ‘barter and compromise’ as main motto. When it is established and takes centre stage after defeating tyrannical rules, the sets of theocracies corrupting the innocent people at the different parts of the world, communal tensions, social rifts and mass exoduses were reduced significantly. It shows that strong political system has the power to incorporate religious diversities, communal differences.
Today, some political parties with strong ideologies, social agenda and commitments are needed to marshal local as well as national human resources instead of building castles in the air. Two- party system which is being practiced in the United Kingdom and United States of America has given alternative to elect as well as stability in the country.
As Giri said, if the divided Left groups come under one umbrella and exercise healthy elections with the Nepali Congress, considered centre of the right, then the country is likely to see peace, stability and prosperity.
