Positive Self-Esteem

blog

Low self-esteem can often lead us to question our own self-worth. It could adversely affect our sense of self and place in the world. As such, today, there are many who are plagued with inferiority complex which is increasing at an alarming rate in the youth.

The very youth who are supposed to be the future leaders, doctors, engineers, teachers, and creatives are doubtful of their potential. Especially those lagging behind due to learning disabilities, financial restrictions, unemployment, or health problems are likely to suffer from low self-esteem.

It is said that children are quite confident about themselves at their early age. It is their experiences while growing up that thwart their inherent confidence. From childhood to teenage years, young minds soak in the judgements, criticisms, praises, and values that are provided to them. All of these experiences and the individual’s own interpretations of them build a life story that seems to be set once he or she reaches adolescence and then adulthood.

However, the brain is known to be quite pliant in nature which means that it is always learning whether at an age of 24 or 48. This signifies that it is never too late to set the wheels turning in one’s life.

Perhaps you put off your education for other priorities. Or you had to work to sustain your livelihood. May be you settled down early on in life missing other opportunities.

Whatever the reasons you abandoned your purpose and ambitions for, it can be said that it is never too late as they can be rebuilt despite the odds. And if you are at a low point in life, know that you are not alone. Things always seem at their worst before it gets better.

As such, according to psychologists there are several ways to boost one’s self-esteem and one of the time tested methods is to practice gratitude. Instead of focusing on what might-have-beens, you could turn your attention to what you have already achieved so far that you can be grateful for. It helps to be grateful and count your blessings as it makes you see your life from a different and larger perspective. Focusing on what you have makes you feel abundant instead of lacking in prospects.

Self-care is also paramount here to maintain not just health but also to create a more positive outlook. Exercising regularly, eating healthy, hydrating enough, learning new subjects, socialising with your loved ones, and taking time for yourself too are quite effective in boosting your self-esteem.

In addition to self-care, a support system in form of family, friends, or even an online community can go a long way in building self-esteem. As a social being, it is inherent to find a community-your tribe who will not just support you but also encourage you to go that extra mile in your ambitions.

Self-esteem is a trending topic these days. The internet is filled with myriad suggestions and advice when it comes to boosting self-esteem.

However, each one has his or her own journey, and it can be useful to learn to love one’s own company. Being comfortable in your own skin makes you feel a lot better. You are unique and you have the biggest advantage in life which is that you are you.
