By Sher Bahadur Sarki,Bajura, Dec. 5: Oranges have ripened in the garden of Paru Rokaya of Gaumul Rural Municipality-4. However, she is still worried due to inability to sell the production.

She said that she was worried because she was able to produce organic oranges after four years’ continuous efforts, but they may rot on the tree as they have not been sold anywhere.

"Oranges are ripe in the garden, but there is no market near the village," she said.

"No one is home, my husband has gone to Delhi, I am alone at home. So, it is difficult for me to sell oranges in other places," she said.

Rokaya said that 450 orange trees were planted in seven ropanies of land in 2073 BS with the initiative and financial support of Agriculture Knowledge Centre, Bajura and Agricultural Section of Gaumul Rural Municipality.

Rokaya said that she was selling oranges at a rate of Rs. 15 to 20 per piece in the village.

She said that if someone from outside comes to buy oranges, they can be given at a cheaper price than that.

She had thought to manage expenditure for her children's education and household by selling oranges this year.

She, however, said that she was worried about managing household expenses after her produce could not sell as per expectation.

Rokaya, who has succeeded in growing oranges by investing nearly Rs. 150,000, is now asking various organisations to buy oranges from the garden itself.

According to the Agriculture Development Section of Gaumul Rural Municipality, the Municipality is encouraging farmers, including Rokaya, to cultivate fruits as it seems that fruit cultivation will help generate income for the local people of Gaumul.

Dipendra Sarki, chief of Agricultural Development Section of Gaumul Rural Municipality, said that Paru Rokaya of Gaumul-4 was a successful farmer.

He said that even though the orange yield is good, now she is having a lot of trouble selling them due to the lack of a market in the village.

He said that the organic oranges produced in the remote villages of the district are not getting the market in time, so the Municipality has also arranged a subsidy for the farmers to take them to the market for sale.
