'Digital transformation is govt priority'

By A Staff Reporter, Kathmandu, May 28: Minister for Information and Communication Dr. Bikram Timilsina has said that digital transformation is a key 0national priority for Nepal. 

Minister Dr. Timilsina made this remark on Wednesday during his meeting with visiting International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Area Representative for Southeast Asia and other Member States in Asia and the Pacific, Kishore Babu Yerraballa, at the Ministry.

Minister Dr. Timilsina said that the government was focused particularly on eliminating the digital divide, expanding connectivity in remote areas, and improving overall digital infrastructure.

According to the Secretariat of Minister Dr. Timilsina, the meeting concentrated on Nepal’s digital priorities, inclusive connectivity, and the development of sustainable and accessible information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure.

Minister Dr. Timilsina informed the delegates that Nepal is advancing digital infrastructure development by linking it with social inclusion and is committed to bridging the digital divide despite geographical challenges. He added that expanding affordable digital access remains a long-term strategic priority, and the government is ready to work closely with international partner organisations.

The meeting also discussed timely ICT policy formulation, strengthening regulatory frameworks, efficient spectrum management, and expanding rural connectivity and digital inclusion.

During the discussion, Yerraballa said that the International Telecommunication Union is willing to further support Nepal’s ongoing digital transformation through technical, policy, and institutional assistance. He said that cooperation could be expanded in areas such as digital infrastructure development, capacity building, legal and regulatory reforms, and expanding digital access in rural and remote areas.

Likewise, Nepal’s recent policy priorities such as expanding the digital economy, e-governance, online public services, cybersecurity, and digital literacy were also highlighted. 

Discussions further covered possible cooperation in areas including amendments to telecommunications laws, the ‘Digital Highway’ concept, smart village programmes, capacity building, and ICT-based infrastructure development.
