By Raju Lamichhane, Rukum West, Aug. 14: Tourists visiting Syarpu Lake said that it was more beautiful in reality than in pictures. Situated in Ward No. 3 and 5 of Banphikot Rural Municipality in Rukum West district, Syarpu Lake is turning as a major tourism destination of Karnali Province. The lake spreads in an area of 2.6 square kilometres. Recent continuous rain has filled the lake completely making the area more attractive.

Locals have also established homestay services for tourists visiting the lake. For the homestay service, 11 houses have been prepared in Ward No. 3 with the coordination of locals and Division Forest Office under Syarpu Lake Organic Homestay Programme.

“The forest office provided Rs. 4.3 million for the homestay programme and locals contribute 30 per cent voluntary labour,” said Mahesh Kumai, chief at the division forest office.

The homestay programme has allowed tourists to have a stay at the place away from the regular hustle of the city. It is why the Syarpu Lake’s majestic environment is welcoming more and more visitors.

The lake is mostly visited by domestic tourists across Karnali Province.

“When it’s a holiday, the lake is crowded; all six boats in the lake are occupied throughout the day. During office days, there are fewer visitors,” said Tulasa Malla, secretary at Syarpu Lake Homestay Operation Committee.

According to Malla, those visiting the lake often looked for a staying place due to which the homestay programme was initiated. Providing a home-like environment with organic and traditional services has pleased the visitors now.

Proper boats are being operated on which visitors can ride the lake. Malla said that they have prioritised quality management of the lake and homestay services to make it as accessible, organic and traditional as possible.

Locals stressed that the lake receives water directly from the Himalayas and bathing in it is refreshing and healthy.
