Melamchi-Helambu road section damaged by flood, pregnant woman airlifted to capital

By Chitra Mizar, Sindhupalchowk, July 21: Various road sections along the Melamchi-Helambu road section were washed away because of a flood triggered by the incessant rainfallof Wednesday evening.

The road at the Helambu Rural Municipality-4 has been blocked since this morning due to flooding. This has obstructed transportation in the flood-affected area.

Shyam Man Chailse, a local at Melamchi said that the reconstructed road section at the Chaunate, Helambu as well as the road section was washed away by yesterday’s flood. Road section along the Dhungebazar of Helambu and Simkhel in Melamchi have been disrupted as well.

The residents around the coastal areas of Helambu Gyalthum and Melamchi river were forced to leave their home due to heavy rainfall.

The Flood Forecasting Division, Nakote reported that the flood occurred due to an increase in the water level by 1.5 meters.

A pregnant woman, Maya Tamang, from Helambu Rural Municipality-4, was airlifted in the morning and taken to a hospital in the capital because of the Melamchi-Helambu road blockage.

Nima Galzen Sherpa, Chairperson at the Helambu Rural Municipality said that they had to call the helicopter and rescue her to the Thapathali Maternity Hospital because the pregnant woman suffered serious health issues owing to high blood pressure.
