Menstruation sign of motherhood: Bhusal

BY A STAFF REPORTER Kathmadu, May 30: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Pampha Bhusal has said that menstruation is a sign of a woman’s motherhood. 

Addressing an awareness generating bicycler rally organised by the Expose Nepal on the occasion of the Menstrual Hygiene Day (MHD) on Saturday, Minister Bhusal said that biological process of women should be respected.

“Menstruation is a pride, it is not a sin or crime. All the three tiers of government should work together for creating a situation in which women could live a dignified life. 

They must ensure that women are using clean, hygienic and reusable sanitary pads during menstruation,” Minister Bhusal said.

Women are compelled to go through gender discrimination due to the lack of awareness, said Minister Bhusal, adding that women’s health should be prioritised by all levels of the government. 

On the occasion, Gyan Maharjan, chairman of the Expose Nepal, said that violence against women would be reduced to some extend by stopping discrimination against women during their menstruation. The Menstrual Hygiene Day was observed by conducting various awareness generating  programmes by different organisations across the nation on Saturday. 

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology collaborated with the Menstrual Health/Hygiene Partners' Alliance (MHM PA) and organised a national event on Friday to celebrate the International Menstrual Hygiene Day.

 Due to taboos and ill cultural practices, there is a huge negative impact on girls and women to access education and health, said Radha Paudel, an activist Initiated by the German-based organidation WASH United in 2014, the Menstrual Hygiene Day has been celebrated in Nepal since 2017 to highlight the importance of menstrual hygiene.
