NC continues lead in vote counting

Kathmandu, May 19:  Ruling Nepali Congress has emerged as the biggest party from the local polls, as it has already won the key posts in the largest number of local bodies while its candidates are leading in more local levels. 

The main opposition CPN-UML, which had emerged as the largest party winning 294 local units in the 2017 local poll, is trailing behind the NC. 

Vote count is progressing on the sixth day after Friday’s local level elections. As of 8:41 pm on Wednesday, the NC has won 221 local units and maintained lead in 78 while the UML has won 138. 

According to the data provided by the Election Commission, ruling NC has secured mayoral posts in 69 municipalities and chairpersons in 152 rural municipalities. 

Likewise, it won the post of deputy mayor in 56 municipalities and deputy chair in 155 rural municipalities. 

Similarly, the CPN-UML has won the post of chief in 138 local bodies, including 39 municipalities and 99 rural municipalities.  The UML candidates have been elected deputy mayors in 47 municipalities and deputy chair in 97 rural municipalities. 

Likewise, the ruling coalition partner CPN (Maoist Centre) has won the mayoral posts in 14 municipalities and deputy mayors in 21. It has secured chairs and deputy chairs in 81 rural municipalities. 

The CPN (Unified Socialist) has been able to win mayors in three municipalities and deputy mayors in five municipalities. 

Candidates of the ruling coalition partner, Janata Samajwadi Party-Nepal (JSP-N) have been elected as chairs and deputy chairs in 11 rural municipalities. 

Candidates of other parties have been elected as mayor in seven and deputy mayor in three municipalities and chairpersons in 16 and deputy chairs in 17 rural municipalities. 

Likewise, NC candidates have been elected chairs in 2,099 wards, UML in 1,626 wards, CPN (MC) in 884 wards, JSP-N in 172 and others in 444 wards. 

CPN (Maoist Centre), CPN (Unified Socialist), Janata Samajwadi Party-Nepal and Loktantrik Samajwadi Party Nepal are trailing behind the NC and the UML.  The Rastriya Prajatantra Party is also leading in some municipalities and wards.  

The ruling coalition partners CPN (Maoist Centre) and the JSP-N are likely to emerge as the third and fourth largest parties. 

CPN (Unified Socialist) is likely to emerge as fifth largest party from the local polls.

Election results of 132 municipalities, 360 rural municipalities, and 5,225 wards have been made public as of Wednesday night.

Counting progressing in six metropolis 

As of Monday evening, mayoral candidates of the ruling alliance have maintained their lead in five of the six metropolitan cities, while 32-year-old independent candidate Balendra Shah has been leading in vote counting in Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC). 

As of 9:00 pm, Shah received 18,036 votes. He is leading with the margin of 8,629 votes to his nearest competitor UML’s candidates Keshav Sthapit. 

Sthapit has garnered 9,407 votes NC’s  Shrijana Singh has received 8,513 votes. 

Similarly, the UML candidate for deputy mayor has been leading the vote counting. According to the Election Office, Kathmandu, UML’s candidate Sunita Dangol has garnered 17,434 votes while the candidate of the CPN (Unified Socialist) Rameshwor Shrestha has got 5,468 votes. 

Likewise, in Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Nepali Congress’ candidate Chiribabu Maharjan is leading the vote count while in Bharatpur Metropolitan City, CPN (MC) candidate Renu Dahal is leading. 

Similarly, in Biratnagar Metropolitan City, NC candidate Nagesh Koirala is leading and in Birgunj Metropolitan City, Rajesh Man Singh of Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal is ahead of other candidates, including Bijay Sarawagi of the UML. 

Similarly, the ruling alliance candidate Dhanraj Acharya is leading the mayoral post in Pokhara Metropolitan City. 

Results of additional four municipalities of Kathmandu Valley were made public on Wednesday.

Jeevan Khatri of Nepali Congress and Ramesh Budathoki of the CPN-UML have been elected as mayor and deputy mayor respectively in Changunarayan Municipality, Bhaktapur. 

Khatri has secured victory with 1,550 votes while Budathoki got 11,107 votes. 

Likewise, Surendra Shrestha of NC has been elected as mayor of Madhyapur Thimi Municipality with 15,098 votes while Bijaya Kumar Shretha of CPN (MC) has been elected as deputy-mayor with 12,102 votes. 

Similarly, Ramesh Napit of Rastriya Prajatantra Party has secured the seat of mayoral post in Sankharapur Municipality with 4,700 votes and Samita Shrestha of NC has been elected as deputy mayor with 6,362 votes. 

In the same way, the UML has secured victory at both the mayoral and deputy mayoral post in Budanilkantha Municipality. 

Mitharam Adhikari has been elected as Mayor with 14,250 votes while Anita Lama has been elected as deputy mayor with 14,314 votes. 

Likewise, Prakash Adhikari of CPN-UML has been elected as mayor in Tokha Municipality with 10,340 votes while Murari Tamang of Nepali Congress has been elected as deputy mayor with 10,132 votes.
