Bagar-Kheti, also known as "Baluwa Kheti" in Nepal, has gained popularity in recent decades, particularly in the Tarai region. It serves as an alternative form of agriculture for landless communities, enhancing their food security. Nearly 3.5 million rural people are food insecure, and 1.3 million households are reported as landless or land-poor across the country. Farmers typically prepare fields and cultivate vegetables in ditches on riverbanks after the post-monsoon season, a practice with a history spanning almost three decades, originating from nomadic farming methods. Many farmers living close to rivers, along with landless individuals, suffer from food insecurity due to limited land for cultivation, unproductive soils, low yields per unit of land, frequent flash floods, droughts, and other impacts of climate change. Riverbeds in the region are annually floode
Sometimes, you can tell what the movie is like by simply watching its trailer. Mansarra’s trailer itself was so compelling that I went to watch the movie on the very first day of its release. It’s not your usual movie with a plain storyline. It’s not predictable either. And these are the qualities that set this movie apart from the other Nepali movies. Directed by Upendra Subba, Mansarra explores the universal themes of women's vulnerability, tragedy, loyalty, and the stereotype behind infertility. In a small neighbourhood on the outskirts of Kathmandu, there lives a family of two—husband and wife. The wife, a Newari woman, had married a Brahmin man who had broken the marriage with his first wife, blaming her for not being able to bear children. The se
Nepal, a mountainous country located between China and India along the Hindu Kush Himalayan range, is facing significant environmental challenges. The nation is situated atop a geological deposit that has experienced significant alterations over the past few decades, leading to active land degradation. Key factors contributing to this degradation include the country's topography, changes in land cover due to urbanisation and population growth, and traditional agricultural practices on steep slopes. Soil erodibility from unscientific farming methods, the use of chemical fertilisers, and unsustainable land management practices further exacerbate the issue. Additionally, unsci
Mahadev is the god of gods in the Vedic religion. This supreme position has not been bestowed upon the god just for appeasement. The rare qualities Mahadev showed to save the cosmic existence and civilisation in times of crisis and the supreme magnanimity he offered to his devotees are all time instances, which puts him in the position of Mahadev. In fact, the knowledge domain of spiritualism is filled with Shiva Mahima, and devotees find solace in it. There are many sastras and slokas, puranas, mythologies, stories, and instances of faiths and traditions. But in traditions, we can even find many practic
Playing at the World Cup is the ultimate dream of any national team. With the low investment and sub-standard infrastructure in sports, playing at the World Cup has been a distant dream for most Nepali national teams and players. Cricket, however, is fulfilling the dream of playing on the global stage by qualifying for the ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup. Nepal first realised its World Cup dream in 2014, when the Nepali cricket team qualified for the T20 World Cup played in Bangladesh. It took ten years for Nepal to revel in the global event again after the cricket team booked their ticket to the T20 World Cup 2024, co-hosted by the United States and the West Indies.
"Yoga is an invaluable gift of ancient tradition." It is one of the best holistic exercises that keeps our bodies flexible and healthy and energises our minds and souls. Yoga is an ancient physical, mental, and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ is derived from Sanskrit, which means to join or to unite, symbolising the union of body and consciousness. India presented the draft resolution that established the International Day of Yoga. Recognising its global appeal, the United Nations declared June 21, 2014, the International Day of Yoga. According to the United Nations, “This year marks the 10th International Day of Yoga with the theme “Yoga for Women's Empowerment.” Its goal is to transform yoga into a widespread movement that emphasises women’s well-being and promotes global health and peace.
The season of monsoon has begun. It is a double-edged sword for South Asian region. The season brings much-needed rains for agriculture in the region, but it also causes floods and landslides. In Nepal, where most of the arable land are devoid of irrigation facilities, monsoon is indispensable for farmers to grow crops for food. At the same time, rain-fed swollen rivers sweep away bridges and destroy critical infrastructure, cutting settlements off the schools, h
The monsoon season has just entered some parts of the country and this news may have come as good tidings for some people, especially those who are engaged in the agricultural sector. But for many others, this message also has come to announce the arrival of bad news, especially for those who have to prepare themselves to face the wraths of nature, loss of lives and property that pour down with the rains. Floods and landslides have already star
Much of the media coverage of artificial intelligence has focused on its potential negative impact. Science-fiction scenarios like the human-robot wars of the Terminator franchise and real-world controversies, such as the proliferation of deep fakes and OpenAI’s unauthorised use of Scarlett Johansson’s voice for its new digital assistant, have captured the public imagination, stoking fears of a dystopian future. Fortunately, both the AI industry and US Presid
If we think of the choking air quality that put Kathmandu on the top list of the most polluted cities in the world, we are forced to contemplate ways to reduce the level of pollution. And one such alternative could be the promotion of electric vehicles (EVs). This technology has emerged as a perfect solution to bring down the massive amount of greenhouse gases emitted by vehicles run on fossil fuels. However, for a country like Nepal, the application of this technology has not been as effective as it should have been. This is more saddening at a point where the country has internationally shown its commitment to attaining net zero emissions by 2045. The nation made this pledge at the 26th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26). In line with this, the country also envisages decarbonising its transportation sector by 2030. The government has targeted to increase the usage of EVs to 25 per cent in 2025 and 90 per cent in 2030. This is really a good plan.

With the implementation of federalism, the rural municipality has recently made significant strides in development.
