The National Statistics Office (NSO) has revealed that Nepal's per capita income has reached US$ 1456 after an increment of US$ 51 in comparison with the year before. The 12th edition of Nepal-Africa Film Festival kicked off at CDC Cinemas in Kathmandu on Friday. The three-day festival, organised by the College of Journalism and Mass Communication and Bilakchhyan Creation, and co-organised by the Film Development Board, will conclude on June 23. The biography ‘Smritima Bhim Bahadur,’ detailing the life of Bhim Bahadur Shrestha, a prominent social activist involved in various social sectors such as education, irrigation, temple and pond construction in Taplejung, has been published. The book was launched during a ceremony organised by the Smriti Granth Publication Committee in the capital by former Chief Election Commissioner Surya Prasad Shrestha and House of Representatives members Sushila Shrestha and Liladevi Bokhim Limbu. Speaking at the book launching ceremony, former Chief Election Commissioner Surya Prasad Shrestha highlighted Bhim Bahadur Shrestha's significant role in establishing Bhanu School in Taplejung. He recounted how Bhim Bahadur travelled to Darjeeling to recruit teachers and how he ensured their salaries, raised funds for school buildings and organised relief efforts during famines. He emphasised that Bhim Bahadur's actions not only fostered education but also established him as a figure of great foresightedness in the community.
The District Administration Office of Gulmi is now drawing a big crowd, as more people are applying for national identity cards. Recently, the government made national IDs mandatory for those drawing social security allowances in 28 districts. Although Gulmi is not one of these 28 districts, there is still a rush to make the national IDs due to fear of not receiving the allowances. Manu Giri, a 74-year-old from Paudiamarai of Musikot Municipality 1, said she visited the District Administration Office to make a national ID after hearing the news that it was mandatory for the senior citizens to receive allowances. She said, “These allowances are my support during old age. Fearing the loss of the allowance, I came to this administrative office for the ID. Now I am relieved after getting one.”
