RSS senior editor Basnet conferred Daya Shankar Journalism Award

Gandaki, May 5: Surya Chandra Basnet, a senior editor with the Rastriya Samachar Samiti, has been conferred the ‘Democratic Fighter Daya Shankar Palikhe Memorial Award,’ which carries a purse of Rs 101,111.     

Basnet received the award along with journalist Krishnamani Baral, a journalist with the BBC Nepali Service. Baral also received Rs 101,111.     

The award, established by the Palikhe family, has been institutionalized by the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Kaski.     

Gandaki Province Chief Dilliraj Bhatta honoured the two with the cash prize and letter of appreciation at a function held in Pokhara today. May 5 marks the memorial day of democratic fighter Palikhe.     

“The role of mass communication in Nepal’s political and social transformations is incomparable,” the Province Chief said on the occasion.     

“I expect that this sector will further strengthen its presence in building society and the nation while upholding the norms and values of journalism,” he added.     

Basnet received the award for the year 2081 BS, while Baral was selected for the year 2082 BS. The FNJ had decided to present the awards to both on April 27.     

Basnet who originally hails from Damauli of Vyas municipality-2 in Tanahu has been in the journalism profession for the past 30 years while Baral from Nuwarthok of Pokhara metropolis-7 has engaged in this sector for the past 28 years.     

According to FNJ Kaski, both journalists are being honoured in recognition of their contribution to society, the nation, and democracy through journalism.(RSS)
