Kathmandu, Jan. 30: Nepalis living in the United States have contributed nearly Rs. 900,000 to Nepal’s Reconstruction Fund through their social organisation, the Nepali Association of Southeast America (NASEA).
NASEA Treasurer Puran Raj Khatiwada handed over a cheque worth US$ 6,128 to Prime Minister Sushila Karki at the latter's official residence in Baluwatar on Thursday. He said the amount was raised to support relief and rehabilitation for the families of youths who were martyred during the Gen Z movement and was handed over to the government for that purpose.
Prime Minister Karki thanked Nepalis living abroad for contributing to the Reconstruction Fund by saving money despite their own difficulties.
She also appreciated the continued support shown by the Nepali diaspora during times of hardship in Nepal. “Whenever we face problems here -- be it a disaster or a pandemic -- you worry about Nepal from abroad,” she said.
“You save what you can and extend support. This is what being Nepali means. In the end, one’s own country is always one’s own,” the Prime Minister said.
