Bullfight organised in Dhading to observe Maghe Sankranti

Dhading, Jan 15: Bullfight events were organized in different areas in Dhading district on Thursday on the occasion of the Maghe Sankranti festival.

As part of the cultural tradition, some 100 pairs of oxen were gathered for bullfighting. 

Organizers said that bullfighting was performed among 14 pairs of oxen at Mulpani and 10 pairs at Laigaun in Tripurasundari, seven pairs at Khalte, five in Marsyangchhap and eight pairs at Sunaulabazar in Nilkantha Municipality.

Likewise, 17 pairs of bulls at Darkha, four at Marpak, nine at Budhathum and 11 at Phulkharka in Khaniyabas were gathered for bullfighting, the organizers shared.

Similarly, six pairs of bulls competed at Maidi in Jwalamukhi in the district.  

Shambhu Thapa, a resident of Mulpani, stated that taking pleasure from bullfighting is a tradition linked with historical legacy here. 

The tradition of engaging bulls in Maghe Sankranti is found in Dhading, Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts. 

The tradition of bullfighting is believed to have started when the then King Jaya Prithvi Bahadur Singh of Bajhang came to his maternal home in Taruka, Nuwakot.

Similarly, Gorkha and Nuwakot are also popular sites for ox fighting in the country. (RSS)
