First time in Myagdi, Seema gets citizenship in mother’s name

By Amrit Prasad Poudel, Myagdi, Jan 13: The District Administrative Office, Myagdi, has issued citizenship in the mother’s name to 22-year-old Seema Pun of Devisthan, Manika Rural Municipality -5, Myagdi.

It is the the first time that the Myagdi DAO has issued citizenship to a person in mother’s name.

Chief District Officer Rabindra Acharya issued citizenship by descendant to 22-year-old Pun on Monday after she remained deprived of citizenship due to the absence of her father’s identity.

Authorities issued citizenship to Pun in the name of her 56 – year-old  mother, Lilsara Pun, in accordance with the second amendment to the Citizenship Act, 2006, and the fourth amendment to its regulations.

Assistant Chief District Officer and Information Officer Kul Prasad Acharya said the administration implemented the provisions of the Citizenship Act, 2006, after the Nepal Citizenship (Fourth Amendment) Regulation, 2025, was published in the Nepal Gazette.

After gaining citizenship, Pun stated she can now move forward with tasks that had remained stalled. She said she felt pain at having to wait until the age of 22 to obtain citizenship meant to be issued after completing 16 years of age, but the certificate has now established her identity. She said she feels highly encouraged to receive citizenship in the name of the mother who gave birth to her.

After receiving citizenship certificate of her daughter, Mother Lilsara said she had fulfilled another significant responsibility after childbirth. She said she feels happy that her daughter has now been able to establish her identity with a Nepali citizenship certificate.

Chief District Officer Acharya asserted the administration has also informed local governments about the procedures required to obtain citizenship in the mother’s name when the identity of the biological father remains unknown. He said the Constitution of Nepal and prevailing laws ensure citizens’ rights.

According to the District Administration Office, Myagdi, documents for three girls seeking citizenship in their mother’s names are currently under process.
