Kathmandu, Dec 6: Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav has stressed on the need of research along with more awareness to combat sleep disorders.
Addressing the second international conference of the Nepalese Society of Sleep Disorders held here today, he emphasised that due to the increasing prevalence of sleep disorders caused by busy lifestyle, unhealthy diet, and the growing use of technology, such challenges need to be addressed in a timely manner.
The Vice President urged one and all to be aware about mental tension, unemployment, economic vulnerabilities and diseases like diabetes and hypertension causing sleep disorders.
"Modern lifestyle, urbanisation, excessive use of mobile phones and social media are aggravating the problem of sleep disorder and making it more serious," he said, adding that this is having a negative impact on human health.
He stressed on conducting awareness programmes on the importance of sleep from schools to communities, calling upon the stakeholders to take action to address sleep-related problems as it is a common responsibility.
Vice President Yadav said that there is a need to increase the number of specialist doctors and health workers, prioritise the identification and treatment of sleep disorders in health policies, promote research based in Nepal, and to strengthen international cooperation.
“Sleep-related disorders can directly affect not only individuals but also social and economic development. By prioritising a regular and healthy lifestyle, meditation, yoga, physical exercise, and consulting with specialist doctors, their effects can be mitigated,” he added.
He expressed the confidence that this conference, with the active participation of national and international experts, researchers, doctors, and policymakers, would bring new ideas, research opportunities, and possibilities for collaboration. (RSS)
