Kathmandu, Oct 22: Chairperson of the National Assembly (NA), Narayan Prasad Dahal, met separately with parliamentary delegations from various countries on Wednesday.
The meetings took place on the sidelines of the 151st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), currently underway in Geneva, Switzerland.
Dahal is presently in Geneva attending the IPU Assembly (October 19 to 23). According to his press expert, Dilli Malla, he held bilateral meetings with parliamentary delegations from the United Kingdom (UK), the People’s Republic of China, and Sri Lanka.
Discussions during these meetings focused on strengthening mutual relations and enhancing cooperation and collaboration in international forums.
The Chinese delegation was led by Tian Xuejun, who also serves as Chair of the IPU Asia Pacific Group. The UK delegation was headed by Fabian Hamilton, while the Sri Lankan delegation was led by Sunil Watagala.
During the meetings, Dahal briefed the delegations on the recent Gen Z-led demonstrations in Nepal, the subsequent formation of an interim government, and the announcement of fresh elections for the House of Representatives scheduled for March 5, 2026.
He reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to conducting the elections on the announced date and to further strengthening democratic system.
The NA Chair also appealed to friendly nations for support in reconstructing infrastructure damaged during the demonstrations and in ensuring the successful organization of the upcoming elections.
Highlighting that Nepal is directly affected by climate change, he emphasized the need for the international community to support developing countries in addressing and adapting to its impacts.(RSS)
