Kathmandu, Oct. 20: The government has resolved to initiate joint security patrols to ensure the forthcoming election is conducted peacefully.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Minister for Home Affairs Om Prakash Aryal on Sunday at Singha Durbar.
The meeting noted that security protocols have often been disregarded through the misuse of power and resolved to enforce these protocols effectively.
Following the meeting, Minister Aryal said that the committee decided to deploy joint patrols of security forces to maintain law and order and create a conducive environment for the elections slated for March 5, 2026.
Security plans will be implemented nationwide through the Chief District Officers (CDOs), with elections being their top priority, the Home Minister added.
According to Minister Aryal, over 400 looted weapons remain to be recovered following the recent Gen Z Movement. A special programme will be launched to retrieve these arms. Additional measures will also be introduced to ensure the return of escaped prisoners, he said.
He emphasised that weapons lost during the protests must not reach the hands of organised criminal groups. Political parties are expected to publicly declare that they will refrain from using prisoners or weapons.
According to Minister Aryal, the meeting also resolved to enforce VIP and VVIP security protocols rigorously. Earlier, the Ministry had recalled security personnel deployed beyond the numbers allocated for VIP and VVIP protection.
The meeting saw the presence of Home Secretary Rameshwar Dangal, Defence Secretary, the Chief of General Staff (CGS) of the Nepali Army, the Inspector General of Police, the Inspector General of the Armed Police Force, and the Chief Investigation Director of the National Investigation Commission. The Chief of the Security Coordination Division Ananda Kafle of the Ministry of Home Affairs serves as the Member Secretary of the Committee.
