Govt to form panel to probe infiltration in Gen-Z protest

Kathmandu, Sept. 16:The government has reached an agreement in principle to constitute a high-level judicial probe commission to investigate the incidents that unfolded during the recent Gen Z–led protests across the country including the Capital.

A meeting of the Council of Ministers of held in Singha Durbar on Monday evening took the decision to 

this effect. 

Talking to media persons after the maiden Cabinet meeting of the formation of the new interim government, Minister for Home Affairs and Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Om Prakash Aryal said that the members and chairman for the judicial probe commission will be finaliszed later after holding consultation with the possible members that may 

include former judges. 

“We need to first consult with the prospective people or members from the judicial sector to form and fulfill the stakeholders for this commission, so we can’t immediately make public the names and appoint them and this process may take some time,” 

said Minister Aryal,

Further, the Cabinet meeting resolved to declare September 17 a National Day of Mourning, marking it with a nationwide public holiday, putting the national flag in half-mast, and official tributes paid to the youths who died during Gen-Z protest, according to the Minister.

Minister Aryal also informed that families of those killed in the protests will be provided with Rs. 1.5 million each, Rs. 1 million in compensation and Rs. 500,000 in funeral support and other expenses for family members of the victims who died during the latest protest and such amount will be disbursed through the Ministry of Finance and respective district authorities, explained Minister Aryal.

The government has also pledged free medical treatment for the injured, complimentary transport and air services for the deceased, and state assistance for cremation rites, said Minister Aryal.

In honour of those killed, the government has also decided to establish a Gen-Z Awareness Memorial Park, which Aryal said has been approved in principle. The location for the park will be determined later.

Minister Aryal further stated that decisions and proposals tabled by the erstwhile Cabinet led by KP Sharma Oli will be sent back to the concerned ministries for review.
