UML 2nd statute convention: 251-member central committee, removal of 70-year age limit for chair, office bearers proposed

Lalitpur, Sept 5: Vice Chairman of the CPN UML, Bishnu Poudel, has proposed a 251-member central committee reducing it from 301-member while presenting an amendment proposal on the statute in the second statute convention of the party that kicked off at Godawari, Lalitpur on Friday.     

As per the amendment proposal there will be 15 office bearers. Importantly, he has proposed the removal of the position of Senior Vice Chairman, reduction the number of vice chairmen from six to three. With this, there will be one chairman, three vice chairmen, one general secretary, three deputy general secretaries, and seven secretaries, totaling 15 office bearers.     

The party is for maintaining a 99-member politburo, with the proposal that the politburo will be chosen through an electoral process with a maximum of one-third being retained.     

The UML has further proposed two types of party membership. In the statute amendment proposal, Vice Chairman Poudel said there would be central bodies like National Convention, Policy Convention, National Convention Representative Council, Central Committee, Central Disciplinary Commission, Central Accounting Commission, Central Election Commission, and Central Advisory Council.     

The politburo and the permanent committee will be managed under the Central Committee.     

Similarly, a council of convention representatives meeting will be held between two major conventions.     

Another significant feature proposed by Vice Chairman Paudel is the removal of the present provision of a 70-year age for the leader to be party chair and office bearers.     

Vice Chair Poudel made floated the proposal for statute amendments in the closed session of the convention.(RSS)
