Triveni (Nawalparasi), Aug 29: Chairman of the CPN (Maoist Centre), Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' has advocated for designating a special or autonomous region for the indigenous Tharu people so that the identity, culture and history of the community would be protected.
Speaking at the inauguration of a Bhodi competition (a traditional game of the Tharu community) organised by the Tharu National Museum and Research Centre at Danda of Nawalpur ( Bardghat Susta East) Friday, he said due to their relatively small population in the region, it seems unlikely for the Tharu community here to achieve their political participation at the province and federal-levels. "That's why one special or an autonomous area within the Gandaki Province should be designated for them to ensure their cultural and political inclusion in the province to the centre. He pressed the need for advocating collective to this regard.
Stating that the implementation of certain constitutional provisions in a correct way is still awaited, he said, though the Constitution envisions protected, autonomous and special regions, the lack of enactment of laws towards that end has delayed its enforcement.
Arguing that the participation of Dalits, women, indigenous nationalities, peasants and workers from the local to federal level was secured on the support of revolutionary movement and the people's movement, he reaffirmed his commitment to advocating and establishing the remaining rights of the Tharu community.(RSS)
