Kathmandu, Aug. 7: A programme on ‘Artificial Intelligence in Fine Arts’ was held in Kathmandu on Wednesday.  Organised by the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts, writer and journalist Ajay Sharma presented a paper on AI in art.

In his presentation, Sharma discussed the background and development of AI, as well as its application and impact in the field of fine arts.

Following the presentation, President of the Society of Fine Arts Journalists (SOFAJ), Keshav Raj Khanal, emphasised the need to be aware of the challenges that the widespread use of AI may pose in the future and highlighted the importance of categorising AI-generated art.

Chancellor of the Academy, Naradmani Hartamchhali said that the use of AI is necessary in accordance with the times.

He said that by establishing standards to identify AI generated art, it could be properly recognised and given its due place within the field of fine arts.

Member Secretary of the Academy, Devendra Kumar Kafle ‘Thumkeli’, said that if technologies like AI are used appropriately, they could yield positive outcomes. He expressed that it is essential to embrace technological developments over time, as they can further assist creative artists.

Chief of the Academy’s Department of Interdisciplinary and Other Creative Arts, Saurganga Darshandhari said that without proper guidance, the use of AI may lack meaning, and comprehensive knowledge is required for its effective use. She also stressed the importance of being conscious about the sources of subject matter rather than totally depending on AI.
