Reform Universities

blog

Universities, centres for academic excellence and higher-level learning, play a constructive role in creating skilled human resources and disseminating knowledge. In developed countries, higher education is placed at the top priority with efficiencies in planning, funding, research and extension activities. A good deal of investment is ensured in this sector. But this sounds challenging for universities in countries like Nepal. That's because higher education is neglected in our country.

Tribhuvan University (TU), the oldest and having a glorious history, has contributed significantly to producing skilled manpower to cater to the demand of the nation. However, there is a massive disgruntlement and complaints about its poor quality of delivery. Our universities are facing severe public criticism for not being able to maintain dignity and excellence.

Blatant political interference is one of the open secrets that our universities have been facing for a long time. The provision of the appointment of political figures in the executive posts must be amended. Political figures can't be academic leaders, nor can they lead the university to the right track. They only work according to the interest of their respective parties and can't go beyond political dictates. This trend has weakened the very foundation of higher education.

That's why every year a large number of youths are flying overseas for higher education. This trend has caused an outflow of billions of rupees abroad in the name of quality higher education. The deep-rooted mistrust among younger generations towards our universities must be reformed to keep the younger generations' faith and confidence. For this, a comprehensive reform plan should be initiated not just for the survival of the universities, but for the all-round growth and development of the nations.

Reforms in higher education must begin with transparency and efficiency in delivery. For this, a revolutionary transformation in all aspects of the university should be taken into account. A dedicated, professional and highly motivated scholar should be encouraged in this field. They should be responsible and dutiful towards their profession. Ethics in the profession must be maintained to achieve the standards of higher education.

Why do we need a political figure as the chancellor of our universities? Aren't there purely academic scholars in our education system to lead the universities? Can't we keep political intervention at bay from the university gate? If we have strong willpower, we can do this and keep our universities free from political influences and provide autonomy for their smooth functioning. Excessive regulation, an unstable policy framework, and violation of the university act and regulations will only deteriorate the glory of the institutions.

Our mission is to meet the global benchmarks of higher education. That's possible only when we adhere to academic integrity. We have to think of institutional culture and values. Let's discard legal rigidity and political syndicate, and adopt a clear and amicable policy that can help our universities thrive.
