Morang, June 6: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said that local levels are the key features of the hard achieved federal democratic republic.
Inaugurating the National Conference of the deputies of the local levels in Biratnagar today, the former President said the local governments are powerful and are hold accountable to the public through federalism.
The former President said, "The leadership role by women at local levels has further strengthened inclusion, accountability and democratic exercises."
She remarked that the constitution has provided key roles to the local governments for local infrastructure development, school management, basic health care, conservation of environment and biodiversity, agriculture promotion, social security, health service, sanitation and others.
The democratic republic has been developed as a lifestyle, not merely a form of governance, she added.
"We have to make people happy and nation prosperous by expediting the development works on the foundation of republic," according to former President Bhandari.
On the occasion, she stated that state of good-governance has remained a public concern across the nation and asked the people's representatives at the local levels to pay much attention to this end.
Likewise, Bhandari said that the existing constitutional provision has not only ensured women's representation but also ensured their leading role in the development works.
She also viewed that political stability should be maintained in the country and development process should be sped up.
Organized by the Biratnagar Metropolitan City, the two-day event has brought together the vice-chairs of the local levels from 291 local levels.(RSS)
