Lumbini Cup: APF and NPC lock horns in final

By Our Correspondent,Nepalgunj, Apr. 25APF Club and Nepal Police Club (NPC) will battle for the maiden title of the Lumbini Cup Women’s International Invitational Football on Friday. Both teams expressed confidence in securing victory during the pre-match conference on Thursday.

APF Club booked their spot in the final with dominant wins, thrashing Karnali 6-0 and easing past Rautahat 3-0. Nepal Police Club also impressed, beating Indian side Siliguri 4-0 and edging Tribhuvan Army in a sudden death finish.

The champions will claim a prize of NPR 505,555, while the runners-up will receive NPR 250,000.

Speaking to journalists in Nepalgunj, APF Club coach Bhagwati Thapa admitted her team is under pressure to win. “We respect our opponents, but we are confident of securing the title,” she said. Captain Anita Basnet added that the final would be thrilling, and her squad is determined to lift the trophy. She also highlighted how the tournament has boosted the morale of female players and the wider sporting community.

On the other hand, Nepal Police Club coach Suman Subedi revealed that his side has devised a strong game plan. Addressing concerns about pressure, he stated, “Football is unpredictable. Even a strong team can have an off day, while an underdog can pull off a surprise.” He assured that his team would put in a solid performance.

Captain Niru Thapa said reaching the final at their home ground was a dream come true and expressed confidence that Nepal Police Club would go on to lift the title. She stressed the need for regular training and administrative support to encourage more female participation in football. She also called for frequent tournaments to elevate the competition’s standard and achieve greater milestones.

The tournament, organised by Antaral in partnership with the District Football Association, featured eight teams from Nepal and India, including Banke-11, APF Club, Nepal Police Club, Tribhuvan Army Club, Karnali FC, Sudurpaschim FC, Siliguri Football Club, and Rautahat District Football Association.
