Mustang, March 13: An archery competition has kicked off at Ghansa of Thasang rural municipality-4 in the district on Thursday.
The bow and arrow competition is organized in a bid to preserve culture and mark the Fagu purnima and Tornalha festivals.
The competition runs for three days. Archery is also a popular sport among the Thakali indigenous community.
The local level informed that the competition was organized to protect the history and culture associated with the mountainous region. It also encourages young generation to learn cultural sports from the older generation, according to Pradeep Gauchan.
Thasang is known as the provenance of Thakali people. The Tornalha festival was owned up by the rural municipality this year for its further visibility and protection initiatives. Archery is listed as this year's sport in the local level.
The competition was inaugurated by the Member of the House of Representatives, Yogesh Gauchan. He observed that the event would help protect and promote culture and tradition.
The government needs to give a public holiday on this day because it is a major festival of Thakali community, he added.
Sports coordinator and Chairman of Thasang-4, Narendra Sherchan, informed that youths from 11 villages were participating in the competition.
On the occasion, the people making social contribution were honoured.(RSS)
