BY A STAFF REPORTER,Kathmandu, Feb. 20: President Ramchandra Paudel has extended his best wishes to all Nepali sisters and brothers residing both in Nepal and abroad on the occasion of National Democracy Day. In his message issued on Wednesday, the President said that the day would inspire representative bodies, political parties and all branches of the state to implement constitutional values and principles.
He also paid tribute to all those who contributed to the movements for Nepal’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, national interest, dignity and democracy. He honoured all known and unknown martyrs who sacrificed their invaluable lives in various struggles for the establishment of democracy in the country. He wished that the day help in achieving the national goal of sustainable peace, good governance, development and prosperity.
Meanwhile, Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav also extended his heartfelt wishes for happiness, peace, prosperity and good health to all Nepali sisters and brothers residing both in Nepal and abroad.
In his message, the Vice President emphasised that the day serves as a reminder of the country’s democratic values, the contributions of the martyrs and the importance of freedom and national unity. He called on all to pledge and resolve to move forward with a dedicated spirit for the rapid development, prosperity and social harmony of the country. He said that the day also reminds us of our duty, responsibility and commitment to strengthen, reinforce and solidify the federal democratic republic.
Likewise, Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba in his message issued on the occasion said that the historic day of Fagun 7 (February 18, 1951) not only established democracy in Nepal but also brought about radical changes in every sector from economic to social, from cultural to religious and educational. “We will be paying true tributes to the martyrs who laid their lives in the democratic movement only if we succeed in transforming Nepal into a prosperous country by safeguarding and institutionalising the constitution and republican democratic system,” Deuba said.
Democracy Day is observed every year on Falgun 7 to commemorate the day when democracy was ushered in Nepal by overthrowing the 104-year-old family rule of Ranas on February 18, 1951.
