By Bidikshan Soni,Kathmandu, Feb. 11: The final of the three Nepali plays, Joon: Parikatha Matra Hoina, reverberated musically at the Nepal Bharat Rang Mahotsav, leaving audiences both in tears and smiles simultaneously.
The Nepal Bharat Rang Mahotsav, which began on February 5, concluded its Nepali plays on Sunday, February 9. Three Indian plays will now take the stage from February 10, continuing until February 12. The plays are: Maee Ri Mai Ka Se Kahoon, Baboojee, and Tajmahal Ka Tender.
On the fading winter evening of February 9, Joon: Parikatha Matra Hoina, directed by Namrata K.C., illuminated the stage with its musical storytelling. Beginning and ending with a song, the music intricately wove the hearts of both the audience and the drama itself. Sobs, cheers, and whistles filled the air, imbuing the theatre with vibrant energy and breathing life into the performance.
The play unfolds through a rhythmic blend of songs and rhymes, with a backdrop of enchanting graphic design that subtly enhances the magic of the characters’ performances. At its heart, the story follows the silent anguish of a daughter who, having lost her mother, must endure the sting of her stepmother’s jealousy. The stepmother, who has two daughters of her own, directs her envy toward the girl, resenting the bond she shares with her father. Despite his deep love for his daughter, the father is forced to leave for a palace to earn money for the family, as his new wife insists it is necessary for their survival.
At the end of the play, each performer was introduced by the director herself, Namrata K.C. She then shared a glimpse into the essence of the drama, saying, “You know, we’ve been hearing tales since we were little. And there’s this saying that tales are not reality, that they’re fictional. But no, they aren’t, right? We grow up and eventually come to understand that tales are more than just mere fiction. They reflect us in a way. That’s why we feel them. For what other reason would there be for the whistles, enchantments, and cheers you’ve expressed today while watching this drama?”
Shortly after her speech, the team was handed a token of love.
