Kathmandu, Feb 9: Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) asserted that the Himalayas growing bare was a clear evidence of increasing impact of climate change in Nepal.
At a programme organized by the Sahara Nepal and the Coca-Cola Foundation here Sunday, Speaker Ghimire emphasized awareness and actions for mountain conservation.
"The fact that the otherwise snow-clad Machhapuchhre mountain showing its rocky surface lately manifest blight of climate change. This issue, however, extends beyond the Machhapuchhre peak. In fact, all other mountainous are facing receding snow cover, thereby showing adversity to the natural balance," the Speaker articulated his concern.
He observed that the imbalance in the nature's cycle contributed to drying up of the water sources, which has direct impact on human and wildlife in those regions. Ghimire further claimed the increasing global heating due to excessive carbon emission by the industrial countries had incurring negative impact on our natural heritages as well.
The Speaker, thus, pressed for consistent efforts for environment conservation and meaningful climate actions.
Furthermore, he stressed collaborative efforts among the government, private sector, civil society and international stakeholders to tackle the challenges emanated from the climate changes. Underscoring planned efforts to support the vulnerable community, he reminded people's representatives that their actions would count for climate actions.
Ghimire also appraised of the important climate actions being taken by the parliament and parliamentarians of Nepal.
His updates featured initiatives on policy making, promotion of renewable energy and environmental improvement taken by the lawmakers of Nepal in the international forums such as Climate Parliament and others.
The parliament was working on formulation of environment related legislations and allocation of green budget among others initiatives aimed at mitigating the impacts of climate change, a pressing concern of the present time, according to him.(RSS)
