By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Jan. 2: 'Caring for the Annapurna', an autobiographical book by the late Dr. Chandra P. Gurung was awarded as the "Book of the Year" by Tamu Hyula Chhoj Dhin Gurung Rastriya Parishad.
According to Roshan Sherchan, Secretary of Chandra Gurung Conservation Foundation, Deputy Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh presented the award during a special celebration of Tamu Lhosar at Tundikhel on Saturday.
The award carries a purse of Rs. 25,000 and certificate. Shikha Gurung Khetan, Chairperson of the Chandra Gurung Conservation Foundation (CGCF) and Adhish Gurung, son of the late Chandra Gurung, received the award jointly. It is informed that 'Caring for the Annapurna' was selected for the award among 16 books published last year, the year of Vulture according to Tamu Sambat.
The book provides a personal account of late Dr. Gurung's efforts in establishing the Annapurna Conservation Area, a groundbreaking model for protected areas. It recounts the extensive field consultations conducted in 1985, alongside the challenges he faced during this remarkable journey.
Eminent conservationist Dr. Chandra P. Gurung with 23 passengers were killed in the tragic helicopter crash at Ghunsa of Taplejung on September 23, 2006. He was the then director of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for Nepal.
Chandra Gurung Conservation Foundation (CGCF) is active in promoting the legacy and people-based conservation philosophy pioneered by Dr. Chandra P. Gurung. The book is published by Books Himalaya Pvt. Ltd.
